The Reserve forms part of a vital wildlife corridor through the Dandenong Ranges foothills. It supports more than 80 recorded bird species, including the state-significant powerful owl, and the eucalypts along Ferny Creek give gang-gang cockatoos a place to feed, drink and roost on their autumn visits.

Vegetation Classes

Two ecological vegetation classes (EVCs) exist in the reserve:

  • Valley Grassy Forest
  • Riparian Forest

The first three of these areas contain vegetation that largely represents what would have been found before 1750.

The Reserve supports at least seven fauna habitat types including Ferny Creek, Riparian Forest, Grassy Woodland, ephemeral wetland. This diversity of habitats plays an important role in providing habitat for numerous native fauna species.
