Yesterday we enjoyed a beautiful morning in the reserve preparing the area at the eastern end of the reserve adjacent the depot, for our tree planing day in May. Thanks to all who contributed in stabilising the bank, spreading the top-soil and tidying up the fallen timber and long grass through this area. Photos by J. Ellis

With the support of Yarra Ranges Council we will start improving the area around the Yarra Ranges Council depot, Melway 74 G11. If you would like to join us, our midweek working bee will be held this Wednesday 5 April, 9-11am. We will meet at the depot end to prepare the area for planting later in May. If you are able to bring a whipper-snipper and/or a spade, that would be very helpful. Please bring gloves and drinking water. We will provide you with morning tea, hand sanitiser, mattocks etc. Photo by Daniel Jackson

Our Bushland Restoration morning will be held on Sunday 19th of March, 9:30am-12:30pm, in Area 15 – across the creek. We will meet at the depot end, Melway 74 G11. You are very welcome for all or part of the morning; or if you are unable to participate in the work, do feel free to join us at 11am, when we stop for morning tea and an informative talk. We'll provide you with tools, hand sanitiser and morning tea. Please bring sturdy shoes, drinking water and gardening gloves. With the ongoing dry weather please watch out for snakes. Two large stepping stones are now in place making the creek very easy to cross. We'll look for weeds such as verbena, agapanthus, pittosporum, ivy and wandering trad. You don't need experience – we'll show you what are weeds and how to tackle them. Hope to see you then! 🌿 ![]()

Thanks to all who came along and made the Night Walk a great night on Saturday night. We were able to see the short finned eel, a powerful owl, sugar gliders, numerous brushtail and ringtail possums, and some busy insects and spiders. It was an eventful evening. Photos: Daniel J Lighting: Nicole Last week we received the very exciting news that Friends of Glenfern Valley Bushlands would be awarded an Australia Day Award by Yarra Ranges Council for Community Group of the Year, shared with the Philanthropic Collective.
On Thursday a group of us attended the award ceremony at the new council chambers in Lilydale to be presented the certificate and trophy by the Councillors and Mayor. The award is wonderful recognition for the important work undertaken in rehabilitating the bushlands and the contributions to the community the Friends Group has made over the years. I wanted to thank and congratulate you all for your part in making the friends group such a success. Your efforts are appreciated and our achievements will be evident in the reserve and the community for years to come. Below is an image of the group following the award ceremony and below a link to the Star news articles. "Australia Day Awards recognises Hills community groups" Jackson Ellis President A happy 2023 to all of you! As in the past few years, instead of a pre-Christmas picnic in the busy month of December, we will be having a Welcome New Year picnic on Saturday 11 February, from 7:30pm onwards, followed by a walk through the reserve not before 8:15pm. You and your families are very welcome to join the picnic, the walk, or both. For the picnic we meet at the amphitheatre and it's BYO everything. On the twilight walk we hope to see some of our local nocturnal wildlife! Please wear sturdy shoes for the uneven tracks, and bring a torch if you can. We hope to see you there! ![]()
This coming Sunday November 20th we're having our last Bushland Restoration morning for the year 2022, from 9:30am - 12:30pm, with morning tea at 11am and an informative talk about a plant, animal or other aspect of Glenfern. We meet at the central car park. We'll provide you with morning tea, tools and hand sanitiser. Please bring sturdy shoes, long pants, garden gloves and drinking water. Hoping for a break in the rain! If too rainy, we'll inform you via email and Facebook. Our last Midweek Conservation & Conversation for 2022 will be held on Wednesday December 7th, 9am - 11am. ![]()
With all the heavy rain we have had recently, our ponds needed a bit of work done on the overflow points. Thank you volunteers. The ponds are looking fantastic and the frogs love them. Photos by Linda F
