The Ist Upwey Scouts will be assisting us with mulching and planting here at the next working bee. Thanks everyone.
The New Road car park end of the Reserve received a great tidy up by the Glenfern team this morning. Whipper-snippering, weeding, picking up rubbish and removing bags and stakes makes the area look more friendly and loved. We thought of our friends and long-standing members, Gill and Paul Derezycky who always helped keep this end neat. The Yarra Ranges Council team, with assistance from our Friends group are planting 500 plants in what we affectionately call the 'giraffe enclosure' – the high fenced animal proof area in the old quarry site which is down Echidna Track.
Please bring a water-bottle, gloves and wear sturdy shoes. Park at the main, middle car park (rock wall entrance), Glenfern Road, Upwey. Saturday 17th September, 10am - 12pm. This will be combined with our 'Bush Restoration' morning rather than running it on 10th Sep as was originally planned, due to poor forecast weather. This coming Wednesday we will be at the New Road end of the reserve doing some preparation work for the 1st Upwey Scouts visit. There will be rubbish collection, weeding and some whipper-snippering to do, so if you have a whipper-snipper please can you bring it.
Please bring tools, whipper-snipper and gloves. Morning tea supplied. Meet at the New Road car park, Glenfern Road, Upwey. Wednesday 7th September, 9 - 11am. We enjoyed having the Year 12 students from Fairhills High come for an educational visit. They also helped us remove the sleeves and stakes from some mature plantings. Thanks! We worked our way through the bush removing weed seedlings. There's a bit of Ivy and Sweet Pittosporum seedlings appearing because of the infestations in the private land opposite. Marilyn gave a great talk at morning tea on how to build an insect house. Thanks to all participants. Photos by Linda Fullagar
August is a great month to visit Glenfern. Our beautiful wattles are beginning to blossom, signalling an end to winter, and wildflowers are starting to emerge from the grassy earth. It really is a picture taking a walk there. This Sunday, August 21st, we have our next bush restoration morning. We will be working in Area 9 which is between Wallaby Walk and Ferny Creek. Meet at 9.30am at the main middle car park, Glenfern Road, Upwey. We break for morning tea at 11am when we will have a talk about making an insect hotel. Tools and morning tea supplied. More details on the flyer below.
